WELCOME TO BNOS CHOMESH

Bnos Chomesh is a girls’ high school in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn.  Our mission is to provide our students with a safe space to excel academically, to thrive emotionally, and to open their minds and hearts to appreciate a Torah/Chassidishe way of life.

We envision a world where every single girl accesses her unique and inherent divine light, everyday shining brighter than the day before—academically, emotionally,  intellectually, socially, spiritually, completely.

Our goal is to provide a warm and nurturing school environment where each students can discover her individual strength, to see beyond her challenges, and to become a self-leader. Bnos Chomesh students are encouraged to excel in all areas, even if they had not attained success in their previous school experiences.

OUR PRINCIPAL

In her 24th year of teaching, the longtime dream became a reality and Bnos Chomesh Academy was born. With a background in Special Education, a New York State certification in Substance Abuse Prevention Counseling, and over 35 years of experience, Mrs. Gorkin has impacted the lives of hundreds of young women and their families.

Her philosophy centers around accentuating positive in each student, building her belief in her own abilities, and helping her to understand that she has an important mission in the world. For more on Mrs. Gorkin's educational approach, watch her series of Chinuch Chats.

Mrs. Dena Gorkin, founder and principal of Bnos Chomesh Academy, had a vision for Bnos Chomesh since she herself graduated high school.

Our secular curriculum includes Math, History, English, US History, and Science.

We believe students deserve an education that is personalized

experience should inspire the student to learn more and
to become a more productive individual.

OUR NAMESAKE

Bnos Chomesh means "Daughters of Chaya Mushka Schneerson" (Chomesh is an acronym for Chaya Mushka Schneerson).

Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka Schneerson, ob"m, was the wife of our beloved Rebbe. Growing up as the daughter of the previous Lubavitcher Rebbe of blessed memory, young Chaya Mushka was well prepared for her lifetime role as "The Rebbetzin." A shining example of regal character and grace, Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka is renowned for her supportive role in the Rebbe's unparalleled devotion to Jews all over the world. Her oft-recounted statement, "My children are in 770," speaks volumes of her love and dedication to the Rebbe's Chassidim.
After her passing, the Rebbe asked that Chabad institutions carry her name, and thereby, her legacy. It is our fervent hope that the students of Bnos Chomesh will emulate the feminine power, intelligence and dignity that epitomized Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka.

OUR HISTORY

Bnos Chomesh is a Lubavitcher girls’ high school founded in 2007 by two idealistic educators who saw the need for a small, warm and friendly school for teenage girls. Mrs. Dena Gorkin and Mrs. Nechama Chanin bring to the table over 60 years of combined experience in education. Both are trained in Special Education. Mrs. Gorkin is also a licensed substance abuse prevention counselor. These two women had seen from the inside that many teenage girls in the larger schools were “falling through the cracks,” whether academically or otherwise. They knew it was time to do something that would make a difference in the lives of these girls and their families.

Bnos Chomesh started out in Valley Stream, Long Island and then migrated to Crown Heights. We originally opened our doors to 14 ninth and tenth graders who were ready for something new in their educational experience. Since that time we have grown to a school of 50 students with 4 grades and a fabulously dedicated teaching and support staff. Bnos Chomesh has evolved into a full mainstream alternative to the larger local schools. We are even cited in Wikipedia's article on Crown Heights!

OUR SUCCESS

Students have entered the school's doors full of anticipation. Their previous educational experiences have left them feeling uninspired or worse, disenfranchised. Thanks to a staff that is trained in making school a positive experience for all, Bnos Chomesh students learn quickly that this is a place where they will succeed and grow academically, socially, and spiritually. Bnos Chomesh has acquired a reputation far and wide as a place where miracles are wrought and students learn to value learning. We are proud to say 90% of our students go on to institutes of higher education.
